Lucius Belfontaine had never realized his pilot was a "whistle while you work" sort of guy until Chet started in on "Be True to Your School." Not that Lucius was a huge Beach Boys fan, but it brought back memories the pre-launch cookout at the beach house just north of Kennedy Space Center. One of the other astros had brought a Beach Boys mix tape, and in the course of the evening that song had burned into his memory to the point that hearing the melody was sufficient cue for him to start singing the lyrics.

Which probably wasn't the greatest idea when they were here in the Soviet moonbase, struggling with a wiring job that would've been hard enough if they hadn't been connecting everything to equipment marked in the Cyrillic alphabet. Face warming with embarrassment, Lucius stopped mid-verse -- and then realized everyone was looking at him as if he'd just used the wrong fork at a formal dining-in.

Dollars to donuts, the cosmonauts all think I was singing some off-color ditty.

The oldies station out of Eureka was playing Steely Dan's "My Old School." Listening about collegiate escapades of an earlier generation made Elaine realize that she should've been starting her freshman year right about now. She'd even had her choice of three acceptances, all with substantial scholarship offers.

Instead she was up here at Sparta Point, with no sign that the danger would abate any time soon and she could return to normal life in Silicon Valley. Or anywhere else beyond the Redwood Curtain, for that matter.

She looked over at Marshal Gruzinsky, who was busy making notes from one of those thick books of military history. The last time she'd asked him, he'd made it plain that the Flannigan Administration's interest in her showed no signs of abating, in a way that made it clear he would regard further questions of the sort as akin to a child asking "when'll we get there?"
