what about the children

There's a point in the plot in which the character has charge of some children. For a long time, and sole charge.
Fortunately, so to speak, the idea I am filing the serial numbers off did not have a very good reason for him to have charge of them, and such reason as it did have would not fit at all.
There may be a rescue involved. And then -- some are orphans, some have families who reasonably think they need training (which this character can provide), and some have families who are aware of the danger of another attack -- to the kids, and to those about them.
And working out the drama.
John Gardner once observed that much of writing is like a writing exercise: you pour effort into things you only need because of something else for the story.
Fortunately, it also has thematic resonance, since certainly non-enemy opponents' children will feature in the resolution.
