She still remembered walking out to do her morning chores and breathing in the scent of soil newly thawed after the melting of the winter's snows. If the wind was right, she could even smell the hog farm a couple of sections over, as the confinement buildings were unbuttoned for better cooling. The town kids on the school bus always complained about the stink, but her dad always called it the smell of money.

Unsurprising when one considered that the latter hadn't been built yet. Even the original Soviet moonbase hadn't been built when NASA set down those first few modules that had become the core of America's permanent presence upon another world.
