The way to give this story a happy ending is to change how knights are treated. Originally they were created for war. Once certain spells were mastered, they were effective for protection -- more against wandering evildoers than armies, but them, too.
The king will resolve certain incidents in this novel by acknowledging a man as a school teacher, without his having to fight or even be prepared to fight. Some knights will object to such activity, even if he's teaching knights how to use their powers because some of them have started manifesting powers that they can not control. The king intends to extend it farther, to things even more lowly. There's already started to be a magitech revolution and this will only help.
