She started to braid her hair. Clumsily.
"Let me help," said Charlotte-Rose. "We can do it more quickly if we braid each others."
"More neatly," said Delia. "But a triangle of each of us braiding each other's hair would be slower than each our own."
"Researching a spell to braid would be slowest of all," said Ava.
Charlotte-Rose collapsed into giggles. Delia shouldered her aside and started to braid Ava's hair. Neatly.
Minutes later, she braided Charlotte-Rose's while Ava braided Delia's.
"Warriors of old wore braids," said Charlotte-Rose. "Because they could not count on being able to cut their hair."

She sighed. Then she took her hair in hand and started to braid it while walking. The braids would be clumsy, uneven, with strands escaping, but she was braiding it to avoid its being caught in something in her flight, not to appear comely before the crowd at a ball.

"What is happening here?" demanded Keith, behind him, and moments later Ewan stalked after.
Liam winced. So much easier when the brothers set out separately. You would think that the dwarf would be wise enough to meet them one by one so that he could test each of them.
"Ah, three princes, three brothers, three sons of one father!"
Keith and Ewan stopped, and their eyes narrowed.
"Surely this is the three-ply rope that is not easily broken! There is a way to save your father. On an apple tree in a far-off land grows fruit that can heal him."

Maidens and knights shifted about in braiding patterns that were hard to follow and impossible to calculate.
But her father wished only for Sir Guillaume and no other to dance attendance on her. His motives could not be good, but she would relish the certainty.
Sir Guillaume bowed to her.

The roses did not bloom. They grew. Long stems entwined with the wall and with each other, rising higher and higher, weaving in and out. The thickness of the dark leaves did not entirely hide the sharpness of the thorns.
"Not so sturdy that they can be climbed," said Rae.

"Oh, the poor little thing," said the woman to the next.
All the women here wore their hair in simple braids, down their back. Like servants.
Her feet swung.
They cooed about her, talking of her mis-fortune, but they bustled on.
She was hungry. A tear trickled down her face.

With her coppery red hair done up in a distinctive triple braid, Amanda Lordsley was easy to pick out in a crowd. At least in theory, that was. Given that she was relatively short, a crowd of sufficiently tall people could hide her quite nicely. And while these guys might not be the Fighting Illini basketball team, they’d serve the purpose.
