With enough foreshadowing?
The band of heroes who attacked our hero at the prompting of the villainess are aware that he was slandered. . . hmm. . . perhaps all the foreshadowing I need for their knowing she's a villainess is some indication that they realize what it means that he's innocent. Especially since there's no way they could hear the story and think she was innocent. Even the most egregious misunderstanding could not lead to what she did.
But they have to learn enough about her to realize that they have to attack, and as swiftly as possible. So I have to set up a kidnapping and therefore a kidnapping victims. . . hmm. . . perhaps one of the existing characters to trim down the attack. They can't call for help but they have a wide array of people on hand.
