She did not look up. The others were probably looking. She could not tell what they were thinking, but she could guess well enough. They could have sent her to study with the gardeners or cooks without the slightest danger. She lacked the power for any spell to be dangerous.

She sighed. She had run away once. She had put her hand to the plow and looked back. What made her think she would be welcome when she returned?
Except that the light was still there. And grew as she walked closer, and closer. It was no longer a path.

He eyed the roses warily. He could see no bones. Which might, of course, mean that he was the first prince to come here. Then, there never was a tale where ignoring what you were told by the little old man on the way went well, even if he showed up after to save you, though muttering you didn't deserve it after ignoring him.
They didn't deserve, thought Liam, and tied his horse. And he, at least, was not going to give the occasion. He would save his father by punctiliously obeying the instructions. And thanking Heaven he did not need to ignore a golden cage for a plain wooden one.
First of all, he had to find the door. And pray Heaven that he could open it. Or a window he could climb through. Roses were one thing. Stone quite another. He walked closer and eyed the dense roses.

He wondered, for a moment, if the ditches were deep enough that he could drown himself. Then he looked at the bodies heaped on the carts. He would, at most, start a quarrel among them. For all he knew, the necromancer could save his life, and then punish his effrontery.

The more time Elaine spent with Lisa Fox, the more surprised she was at how different their upbringings had been. Yes, they'd both grown up in rural communities where agriculture was the primary economic activity, but the vineyards of Napa Valley seemed to breed a much more open mindset than the cornfields of Iowa. Nothing in Lisa's stories had suggested any of the anti-intellectualism Elaine had experienced, let alone the open "you think too much" that several of her teachers had told her.
