A princess discusses the possibility of a marriage alliance with the elves. It would at least show their sincerity in the peace talks, and she knows she has to consider politics. Even if the trolls have been the elves' major foes, they still have been fighting humans.
It's a bit of a surprise when the offer is taken up and Essie finds herself going through the human ceremony with the elf prince Farrendel, with the elven ceremony to follow when she goes to the elven city.
Complications ensue. That the elves do not use nicknames, the story behind Farrendel's birth, the elves' attitude toward scars, Essie's inexperience with the necessary walking at heights on narrow branches, archery, hostilities with the trolls, and more.
