Valery Mishin watched the thermometer with sick dread that he dared not show. What would happen when the Sun cleared the nearby mountain range and the Soviet moonbase was under the full force of its glare? Would the Amerikanski astronauts' repairs to the chillers hold together, even amidst the electrostatic disruptions of lunar sunrise? Or would the "oni" disrupt the delicate balance of their life support systems and leave the cosmonauts roasting before things settled enough to make an emergency flight to the Amerikanski moonbase?

Which assumes that Comrade Tsiklauri would even consider permitting such a flight.

Ah, such a delicate balance.

As soon as this ended, she would roast herself by the fireside, Ava resolved. Which meant that it had to end. Her shoulders slumped. She could not conjure in the classroom, she had no hope here.
The others looked appraising. Julian took no more heed of her in his studies.

Ava? Really? Eleanora swept up to the table and considered the roasted meats and eggs before she looked up and said, "I, Beatrice? You thought I would know something of what happened to Ava? I presume her brothers finally decided on a bridegroom and persuaded themselves that he's of high enough birth."

"At the next inn, we must order a roast duck," said Ewan. "Or at least a roast chicken. To celebrate."
"No," said Kevin. "No counting our chicks unhatched. There will be time enough for banquets with roast peacock, once his treachery is dealt with. We must be ready to move."

"So, is that it?" Mistress Ida's face twisted with scorn. "You will sit here and eat roasted duck while better knights than you are roasted by monsters they face?"
Karl looked back at her.
She recoiled. "Or do you expect to be the monster? You know that wizards oft produce monsters long after the wizards are safe in their graves, fearing nothing of the horrors their monsterium can produce? The power of starlight could produce great monsters as well."
"That," said Master Stephanos, "is why I chose him. No matter how dangerous the monsterium is, it does not choose randomly."
