a history of knights

The first knights, I know, were enchanted to be super-knights. Stronger, tougher, faster. . . .
The thought of the first woman knights floated up -- long ago in history now -- and they were, I concluded, knighted because there were flying monsters, and lighter people were needed to climb to their nests, the only place they could be brought to bay.
And one chirpily announced that she revealed that she was one of those who manifested powers not quite intended, she had "wings" (actually some kind of energy field, though she doesn't have the words, light, perhaps) and can fly. . . .
Now I have to decide if she was the first one to have emergent powers. Or perhaps the men who had them before her were not so drastic. . . it's a bit hard to determine which knight was first magical when wizards had to work out things that permanency and spell strength, perhaps the emergent powers were also incremental. Of course, that would mean some are out.
Hmmm -- I was thinking that a flaming sword was a hint you had acquired a new power. But there are magical swords. Perhaps a knight might enhance the sword's flame and not quite realize it. Or he might and the wizard not believe.
