Charlotte-Rose had gotten to the breakfast room first, but even she did not seem gabby today. Ava wondered whether the woodpecker had woken her, too, but not enough to ask. She took a bowl and choose her foods, though she felt too tired to eat.
Casting spells would be worse.

"As far as I can tell," she said, "the nest not only isn't there, it never was." She cocked an eyebrow, but then, Autumn did not feel gabby herself. Still, perhaps Lucie could guess.
"Yet, we have an egg. And nowhere to go. Unless you know a path from here?"

Liam swallowed. At least it seemed to want to talk. Slowly, he descended, finding the footing harder to find than when he climbed, but still he stood on the ground before the bear more swiftly than he dreamed possible. It stood on all fours, and still came to his shoulder.

They pushed through the thicket. Desperate souls, thought Gerolt, grimly.
"Mercy!" screamed one tattered woman, grabbing at Fabiola's boot and gabbling on. "Oh, merciful Heaven help me, have mercy on me! They seize children to force to their work, I could not escape, I will help you know their work!"

"That just doesn't seem like the Leonid Gruzinsky I knew." Admiral Chaffee looked from the television to Shelly and Lucius. "You know the typical Georgian: short, dark, lively and talkative. Leonid was always a consummate raconteur. You'd always wonder just how many of those stories were actually true, and how many had grown in the telling."

Shelly wondered whether to point out that head injuries could lead to significant personality changes. However, she could also tell that the admiral had been fond of the young military attache who'd risked everything to help NASA get their astronauts safely back to Earth. Did she really want to risk rubbing salt in the wound of having had to cut off that friendship when relations between the US and USSR became strained -- and now discovering that the man he'd once known had been left with disfiguring wounds, which would also end a pilot's career?
