a set of series

Was contemplating the notion of endless series -- again -- and on reflection --
There is a half-way house between "setting in common" and "central main character in common," and that's a set of characters.
This is, in fact, how romance series work. The main couple do not quarrel and have to reconcile in the romance plot. They move to secondary characters, and a new couple takes center stage. For some reason, the guy whom the hero was jealous of in the earlier work is very popular as the hero of the later work. Sets of siblings are also popular, though they tend to seem staged. And of course, characters out of the blue just need some background -- and a setting where their appearance would work.
