the crow and the castle

The hero is in an enchanted castle, which will protect him.
Outside is an ill-minded crow witch, who will try to kill him.
He may, or may not, be able to win that fight, and he knows it.
I need him to go out.
That means he needs a motive to go out.
True, he knows she's there, and realizing he has to go out is something of a relief to him: she's obviously not going to go away, and even a palace can be a prison. Still, he's not the type to woo death, and I don't want him confined so long that he goes stir-crazy. He's going to have to have a reason.
In a further complication, this will determine the enchantments. It will not be food or water. If it's firewood, he will need to supply firewood in the future, the castle won't.
Likewise anything made of cloth.
