Ken Redmond looked at the sticky mess at the bottom of the dish. It smelled like chocolate. It looked like a cat had had an accident.

Jenn had been talking about how much she'd like to try making some chocolate fudge "just like your mother always made it" for Christmas. But as head of Food and Nutrition for Shepardsport, she couldn't very well go making a batch just for family, so she had to present it as an experiment, presumably with an eye for scaling it up and giving everyone in the settlement chocolate fudge for an after-dinner treat.

"Edible, but not fit for company," Mom would've declared it. Rather like the cookies with burnt bottoms, it would've been eaten at home, because his family wasn't wealthy enough to throw out food simply because it wasn't pretty.

However, that wouldn't give Jenn the why she needed if she were to correct the problem. "Most likely it's another problem with convection currents in lower gravity. I'd have to do tests to be sure, but you may want to change a few parameters and keep making small batches until you get a decent result."

Unfortunately, "decent" might be the best they could do -- and Jenn had been a cordon bleu chef back on Earth. She prided herself on feeding her people food that wasn't just nourishing, but pleasing to eyes and palate as well.

And we still haven't completely figured out the issues with the fry vats.
