Good explanation of what's going on. You see it other places besides SF, of course; retro styling, back to basics push in schools and home schoolers, and the current antique craze.

I wonder about bringing it up in "standard" SF, in particular, a setting about a hundred years off, after a near-cataclysm launching a nostalgia storm. I'm working on that for NanoWriMo.
