In 2180, Lieutenant Selene Genji is watching the Earth be destroyed from a ship that is caught in the backlash. In 2140 Lieutenant Kayl Owen is monitoring space and picks up some wreckage. Going to it finds a survivor.
Their doctor realizes she's part alien -- in an era before the aliens arrived. Earth Guard reacts strongly to her presence. (making me suspicious in fact) Owen has problems as well because his father was blamed for his ship being lost, and they order him to take her off the ship. The shuttle is sabotaged to kill them both.
The story winds on, including meeting his aunt, a criminal broker who foolishly is untrustworthy, friends of Owen's and his backstory, the arrival of aliens, distractions, engineering issues, the danger that if she changes the past, she might disappear in a puff of paradox, and more.
