"We have heard nothing of substance all day," said Otto, his voice deep. Sylvie looked up to see him cradling Snowfall.
Marlene yawned.
"They are fine," said Adelaide, reluctantly releasing them. "What else matters?"
"We went with Dorothea," said Sylvie. "The soldiers came. We hid. They blundered into ghostweed, and we got away." Then she yawned too.
"We can tell you the rest in the morning," mumbled Marlene.
Snowfall merowed.
"You slept," said Marlene accusingly to the kitten.
"Bed, for both of you," said Otto, and they escorted them off and into the cottage. Snowfall padded over to Sylvie's pillow.

"Great attacks are something of substance, to be sure," said Marcus. "To fight necromancers like your captor. But consider what it would have meant if Annike could not just have cut your chains. That required a delicate touch."
"I can light fires in a fireplace," said Hans. "So logs burn."

It was an awkward meeting in Medlab, the head of Security with the Chief Flight Surgeon, debating whether to call in someone from Science. Or perhaps several someones, given the nature of the substance. Although it showed no cellular structure, it exhibited behaviors more akin to a living organism. Would Biology be more able to provide answers, or Chemistry?
