When Lisa Fox had been studying in the Russian Empire, her biggest problem had been resisting the temptation to spend too much time hanging out with her Georgian friends. They were fellow wine drinkers, which made it easier to keep her head while socializing. However, almost all of them spoke Russian with some degree of the guttural accent that marked the speech of Tsar Joseph and the other members of the Imperial Family. Not the best models for someone who was supposed to be mastering the language, as well as studying the literature.

Silence reigned for a minute after his declaration rolled out.
"Then," said Queen Isabella, "I suppose I must see to the wine cellar. And the pantry. It will not be a light undertaking."
She stood. "Aurora, come. You must understand how to manage a household before you are a bride."

"Now, good husband, there is no need to talk like that to the lad." Mother appeared, and her cloak lapped about him. "If you wish me to cease, I will."
She looked very pale, like salt, thought Lelio.
"Come in, then, if the cold was so wearisome. Mulled cider, too.'

"Send for wine, then," said Aurelie. "Let us toast our venture and enjoy the night."
A servant must have anticipated the summons, as the wine was brought in, with cakes and cups, and they ate and drank. Gormain and Marian began to talk of ventures, and their monsters, from before.

"I was tired of wine anyway," said Gavin. "Let the fight begin!"
"And how will the children fare," said Karl, "if you fight?"
Gavin laughed. "Remove them while I stop the evil knight who wishes to destroy them!" He leaned forward. "I will drink to rejoice in victory. Not now."
