Laughter and music rose from the field. Where stubble spread, a bonfire rose, and all the peasants reveled. A great line of dancers circled about the fire, dancing in and then out again.
Aurora sighed and leaned against Giovanni. "We had dances at court during Harvest Home. After the Lammas service."
"So did we. How we did dance."
A plume of sparks leapt up over the dancers, and shouts of glee followed.
"Your cousins were right about all the wonders a princess has. But one can lose all those and not gain those of a peasant who envies a princess."

"Even there?" Scholastica pointed to a bank by a deep tangle of woods.
"Mayhap they had to coil up some rope that got loose. Happens from time to time. Or even odder things."
"Like having to bury their gold?"
"Ain't going to bury it by the bank."
"No, they wouldn't."

The brown-haired girl stopped speaking. Her companion turned to look.
You have been caught in your own coils, thought Erik. There is no way out except through. Carefully he held out his bow and quiver and laid them aside on a boulder. Then he held up the white cloth again.

The cables had been coiled around thick spindles, making them easier to lay -- until it turned out someone had been careless in reeling them on. As soon as we discovered that problem, we knew there would be big trouble as soon as the bosses found out.
