Roderick winced.
"Was it such a nightmare that you can not bear to speak of it? Truly that would be a misfortune, but nothing to frighten Helena over."
Helena looked still more pale.
Violetta remembered Princess Leopoldine and could not quite blame her.

"And that's why you need to specialize in a royal magic," said Constantino. "It would be nice if we could turn you loose on plants, Rosa. It would be nice if we could turn every one of us on whatever magic we need. But we can't study during a disaster."

Don't let it distract you, she told herself. Or thoughts of how the others would say she harassed them about so many things thinking she could fix it.
She forced her breath out. Heaven help her. She had to prove that she could not fix it before she gave up.

There are some definite positives of being a telepath assigned to our embassy in a nation of telephobes. For one thing, it's much easier to establish a secure line of communication back home to report the latest trouble. The Qal have tapped all our normal communication lines so frequently that we never use those for anything at all sensitive.

Like the current discussion I was having with my superiors in the Markani Union's Department of State. ::They do not view such actions as mere pranks, but as criminal harassment, even a direct attack upon the authority of a master over his slaves.::

With fellow Sei, I probably could've communicated the gravity of the perceived offense, how the Qal viewed their status as well-nigh sacred, and mockery of their authority as tantamount to blasphemy. Too bad that Galanda was a Nix, one of the Children of Mischief, whose myths and legends traced their descent from a trickster god. While other peoples' maledictions cast aspersions upon one's parentage or toileting habits, the worst Nixic insults accuse their targets of being incapable of taking a joke.

Hmmm, they probably should send some stuff so that the Qal don't realize they have a secret means. Or have another way to apparently send it.
