Not all the trees are leafless. . . along the side of the highway there are great stands of trees, with no sign of leaves on their boughs, all their trunks darker brown where rained on, but here and there among them sapling are growing -- some quite tall, except next to the trees -- and their leaves did not fall, but were bleached by the wintry sun to a pale, pale, shade, with only the faintest touch of yellow to make their whiteness the shade of an eggshell, and standing about the darker trees like brides in their wedding gowns.

Yes! I think those leaves are like ghosts, and the trees are like ghost trees. Here, the trees that look that way are beech saplings. I wish I had a picture to share with you, because then I could ask if they were the same as what you're seeing.

Your description is so beautiful--brides in their wedding gowns.
