So the heroine is getting her potted history of the world. Which she wants to hear, and she has fallen in among people who would reasonably tell her.

One point, I thought would be best delivered by a youngster to whom it is personal, and is bitter about it. (It's hardly something to be sweet about, given she was thrown out of her family.) And I had already assigned each of them family backgrounds, because I had to explain how each one ended up here, because I didn't want to make them all the same by accident, and because it helped explain their personalities -- not to mention lend them some personality.

Hmmm. After a minute, I consider whose background to tweak. After all, some are close enough to reach it.
