Jim Markwalter had thought himself a seasoned professional military officer. He'd seen his fair share of action in the Global War on Terror -- but nothing compared to seeing a massive column of Azhaghat soldiers marching toward his position.

It had been one thing to listen to a senior Chongu officer delivering a briefing on the Tchiador and their various sepoy species. Even hearing about the Azhaghat's disturbing dietary habits had seemed distant, clinical. But to see what looked like a living carpet covering the ground...

Time to call in the heavy artillery.

Wise call.

He set their order quickly. She and Helena went in the center, with Corridon. He must have watched them all closely, she supposed.
They set out.
Halfway there, it occurred to her that he might have thought showing confidence would put more heart into them, even if he were ignorant.

"She's not going to march out here and join us. We could do more good by returning to our books and studying. The more spells, the merrier."
"Can you learn a spell to hide from her?" said Honor, as gently as she could.
"I can look for her," said Lucius.

The day grew darker. It was hard to mark the sun's path with the road going north and south, but the shadows made them both move the more quickly.
"What's that?" said Rosalind.
Elisanna looked. A cottage, she thought. It looked as if made of -- bread.
They, pale, marched onward.

Moments later, a golden carriage appeared. With footmen marching to conduct her to it, and a driver, and ten horses in shades of gold to draw it.
The fae godmother smiled. "You will bedazzle them all."
Marguerite managed a smile. The footmen and driver looked rather bewitched, not with her.
