Book 2 of Magical Empires, but it does shift to new characters and fill you in the relevant first book knowledge. (Spoilers for the first book, though.)
It opens with the two main characters separately: Michael Aisling, son and now brother of a duke, receives a letter from a dead man. Albinia Blakely is trying to escape her mother and search for Al's seven vanished half-brothers, by climbing out the window on a rope made from sheets.
But Michael's letter contains a spell for him to use on a rowboat, which puts him in a position to rescue Al.
A brief excursion to Michael's family home in London reveals things to both of them -- when Michael is magically abducted and Al grabs him. And thus they are precipitated into adventure.
It involves characters who turn into swans, or a wolf; a baby of unusual species; how Al's mother came to marry her father and more secrets about her heritage; a proper fairytale path; learning about magic and how it can be worked with mathematics; no less than two conflicts over claims to thrones; and more.
