And when they were on the path toward the cottage, between two pastures where the cows headed toward their barns, and no one else was about, he walked still more slowly. The sky was turning orange and red, and half the wildflowers had closed for night.
"There it is!" caroled Ava, and ran ahead.

Date: 2026-05-19 01:18 am (UTC)Terry had tried. I had to give her that. But it would’ve been so much easier if she’d just asked instead of muddling through on her own.
Even as I opened my mouth to scold her, I stopped. Terry was an Earthling, and still very much in awe of being assigned to work under an astronaut who was already famous when her parents were that age.
Better praise sandwich this one. The girl had talent, the sort we needed up here, and it wouldn’t do to destroy her confidence before she had a chance to learn the basics.
