This is not an urban fantasy. It's not an epic fantasy either. It's magic realism, where magic is odd and quirky and not always to be relied on -- or even to be clearly there. There's a giant in the story, and he's well within the normal bounds of giantism.
Emily comes to Mullaby North Carolina for the first time, because her grandfather is her only living relative after her mother dies. To discover that her mother had a past to leave behind her, and lights dancing in the forest, and wall paper that changes color.
And Julia is still there, after coming back after her father's death, but it's just temporary, until she's run his barbecue restaurant long enough to pay off the debts and have enough left over to open her own bakery. Two years, she told everyone, and she has only six months to go. Her cakes, and all the sugary scents that draw people in, are doing the trick for the money. And her past has not really surfaced for that last year and a half. . . .
Romance, mysteries, secrets, discoveries, and lots more. In an easy going, ambling plot that nevertheless deftly ties everything in while you are not looking.
