Alice's Adventures In Wonderland by Lewis Carroll

The original and probably still unexceeded standard for strangeness in world-building, as Alice falls down the rabbit hole to find Wonderland.

And despite the wackiness of the events along the way, she's in there and acting and reacting so thoroughly that it pulls you along even with the thread of her wanting to get into the garden is in the background.

It's often called illogical, which indicates that perhaps that logic is insufficiently taught in schools nowadays.  Much of its humor is the relentless pursuit of logic, treating all terms as if they were fixed objects, and ignoring all idioms.

"Take some more tea," the March Hare said to Alice, very earnestly.

"I've had nothing yet," Alice replied in an offended tone, "so I can't take more."

"You mean you can't take LESS," said the Hatter: "it's very easy to take MORE than nothing."
