The Song of the Quarkbeast
Aug. 30th, 2013 11:49 pmThe Song of the Quarkbeast by Jasper Fforde.
The sequel to The Last Dragonslayer, and I think, even better. Spoilers ahead for that.
The surge of magic settled back down. The crackle is increasing, but slowly. So Jennifer Strange, 16, acting manager of Kazam, is shuttling about wizards to find lost things, move oaks, and take deliveries on flying carpets.
But when she brings Perkins for his license test -- they need him in rebuilding a bridge -- she finds they are being challenged. Magical challenges are bad news, but she can't refuse by law. And it's an attempt to control all the magic in the land, so they need to win.
The rest of the tale involves the possible machinations of the Mighty Shandar, the interest of a moose, the queen putting her foot down, a rescue by flying carpet, a discovery about trolls, the limited number of Quarkbeasts that can exists, and what would happen if it were attained, a hunter with a trank gun, and a request for a date. In one of Jasper Fforde's amusing and wacky worlds.
