Agatha Heterodyne and the Beetleburg Clank by Phil and Kaja Foglio.  Volume 1 of Agatha Heterodyne, Girl Genius!

Some series are just stories plopped in the same setting.  Some are the episodic adventures of a character.  Still others have continuity, events in one affecting the next, and this can lead up series that are in fact a single story separated into volume.  And Agatha's tale is definitely the last.

Clank is an excellent introduction to it.

The first edition was in black and white -- oops, brown and white.  This one is in color.  Even if you find it difficult to believe after the first page because it is brown.  (For excellent aesthetic reason that will not be fully revealed in this volume.  0:)

But Agatha Clay is walking down a street when an apparition appears, and causes static electric to arc.  She bolts down an alley to escape, and two stray soldiers accost her.  One robs her of her locket, her only memento of her parents, and she hurries on, distraught, to the university, where even this news is overwhelmed by the visit of Baron Wulfenbach, their overlord.

The rest of the story features an underling outraged at his treatment, a thrown bomb, her parents being worried about the loss of the locket, Agatha's sleep-walking, and a mysterious death.  All to conclude with a moment of revelation and a transition.
