philosophizing about the fair folk
Sep. 22nd, 2013 10:33 pmRead a fair number of books about the -- ehem -- Fair Folk nowadays.
At least the tendency to have humans with pointy ears seems notably diminished. They do tend to have a touch of fae about them. If not perfectly -- ah, well, it's not an easy trick to pull off.
Though I have noticed a certain common plot in a number, where a girl gets drawn into Faerie and finds that she has a royal position, usually by blood. And there's an uncommon tendency to hook this up with the change of the seasons. It seems to have stuck as hard as the notion of silver bullets for werewolves -- which, as it happens, were an invention of the movies. (Not the general notion of silver bullets for certain evils, I must admit. The notion that werewolves are one of those evils.)
None of them seem to notice that when it's summer up here, it's winter below the equator. And vice versa. Might be fun to read a work in which the heroine instead points out that their pageantry follows and does not lead because if it were the other way round, they would just being going north and south with seasons.
