Ah, Freefall.  If you're not reading this comic, I recommend it.  Start it here.

And if you have been reading it, you want to catch up before you read this.  Because the spoiler is enormous --

All the mystery about Dr. Bowman suddenly appears as misdirection, because finally we know his biggest secret.  And in spite of learning of the existence of intelligent chimpazees, and their psychology -- why, there are so many more humans of such bad character that I doubt that anyone guessed that Dr. Bowman was not human.

Such wonderful, wonderful, wonderful set up and foreshadowing, and such an astounding reveal.

And he caps it all with the perfect punchline.  "Somehow, you expected me to be taller."  Which manages to underscore that we did have expectations, without realizing it, despite the way the comic talked at length about how little was known about Dr. Bowman.  And be funny as well.

Such a wonderful comic!

The look on Florence's face was priceless.

I remember the (much earlier in the series) seemingly throwaway line about the enhanced chimpanzees being sociopathic, and now realize to what it was leading up. I also get the impression that, even by augmented-chimp standards, Dr. Bowman is a seriously mad scientist, in every sense of the word.

Actually people did! It was one of the moderately much-discussed theories on the forum, based... basically the descriptions of both the chimps and Dr. Bowman, plus the information given to Winston that there were two genetically engineered sapients on the planet.

I didn't have a strong opinion one way or another, although the nature of the security around him and the comment about reflexes just beforehand gave me a feeling they were right. But I'm kind of thrilled for the people who called it, and I don't think being prepared for the idea made it any less amazing a moment for me.

I also love the Dickens allusion.
