Monster Hunter International

The first in a comtemporary fantasy series -- not enough time in the city to qualify as urban. Owen, our narrator, is working his tail off as an accountant beneath a horrible boss, when one day he works late. The boss turns into a wolf and tries to eat him.
After a strange dream, he wakes up to find himself being monitored by a pair of federal agents. Another man stops by to offer him a card and a job hunting monsters. As his old company sent him flowers and a pink slip -- he had survived only with his gun, which company policy forbade on the property -- he sets out to take it.
And discovers he's involved in something big even by the standards of Monster Hunter International.
It involves a conquistador, a man who tried to bring his wife back from the dead, a chemistry teacher who survived a zombie outbreak, lots of dreams, a boat with a missing lifeboat, falling in love with a girl who already has a boyfriend, the PUFF rules about bounties (that stands for Perpetual Unearthly Forces Fund), lots of guns, and much more.
