marycatelliOne complication of an ensemble plot is sometimes you put in an event that affects them all.
Differently, of course. No point in having two characters in an ensemble that would react the same. But the crucial point is that orchestrating all this information takes juggling points of view and characters.
At least some of them, this time, will be able to talk about and so don't have to have point of view scenes.
Fortunately, I then get to drop the first bomb on them, and they will acquire a sudden driving focus to keep the story moving. Even Loveday, who tells them they ought to study wizardry to learn it, not to practice for this contest, is going to find herself caught up in the work.
Especially since she has the knowledge spells, and, as Susan so practically observes, it's forbidden to forbid the contestants to use any form of legal magic.
