My venture:

Talia eyed the ladder, going up and up and up.

She wondered if she should tell them she was afraid of heights. But at the moment, on the whole, she was more afraid of being left alone here.

"This way, Talia," Clutterbuck pointed out the stairs.

She sighed in relief.

It grows toward the sunlight, one thin stalk reaching upward, putting no energy into side branches. It reaches for that single patch of light.

Which one? Heights or solitude?

I was thinking heights. I thought her fear of being left alone was more situational than general. But if it's general, then I imagine that fear will be challenged also?

It is situational, they are wholly and inexplicably alone in a space station, but it's going to last the overwhelming majority of the story and raise -- existential questions.
