My venture:

He looked at the kids. For a moment, he thought of telling them to go through the records, and flag anything that looked odd. But they would have no idea what was odd, or normal.

He sighed. "Get some sleep," he told them. "We may need you to be alert."

He was the kid who stuck a flag on the back of his bicycle, a tall vertical rod with that banner waving in the wind. We didn't know what to do when he pedaled by. Some kids saluted, first as a joke but later because it seemed the thing to do.

Nice! I considered this kind of flag at first, but couldn't think of a story around it.

I wouldn't have even thought to do it if Mary hadn't used "flag" in the verb sense. Got me thinking of alternative flags. I loved yours--I'd salute a bicycle flag ^_^
