"did" because much to the discontent of the old folk talking of the days of yore and how these things would never had been permitted (and get off my lawn, you whippersnappers!), their ships are often ships nowadays, built of oak and often manned by selkies, who can't conjure worth beans. (No mermaids -- or mermen -- but then they've always been known as pirates and wreckers, not sailors as such.)
But while they are grumbling, I was poindering what they would grumble about. Leaf boats? Acorn caps? Eggshells? (True, eggshells were connected with witches in the folklore, but then, witches were also connected with the Good Folk.) Not because they are small enough -- another grumble is that some of the Good Folk are actually shrinking and resorting to wings, instead of flying on dried yarrow stalks like sensible and proper souls -- but once the magic was done, they were ready.
