My venture:
"There's oatmeal," said Tristan.

"I don't recommend it," said John. "Cooks all over settled space maintain that it's impossible to make right. Always ends up lumpy."

"We have it at the school. I've heard that military cooks are bad, but not that bad."

"Besides," said Talia, "pastry's quicker. Time's short."

We lie on the wide, lumpy couch. Stuffing pokes out of the cushions. Rain slaps the window behind us. We pull up the quilt and start the movie, heedless of the popcorn kernels that fall onto the fraying upholstery.
