Burn for Me by Ilona Andrews
An urban fantasy. Set in an alternate world where use of a serum endowed some families with magical powers, of varying strengths.
Mostly first person from the point of view of our heroine and private investigator Nevada, some third-person for another major character, Mad Rogan. For different reasons -- family for Rogan, contractual for Nevada -- they are both trying to track down a criminal with high powered fire magic and poor impulse control.
It's an interesting combo. Nevada is passionately loyal to her family and has hidden her magical ability to detect lies for fear of what jobs she will forced into if it's known. Rogan -- is not a sociopath because at one point, claiming to have done something for selfish reasons pings her as a lie. There are a few -- very few -- other signs that he's not a very high-functioning sociopath.
Their tracking down involves t-shirts, a "childhood friend" of the criminal, Mrs. O'Leary's cow, Nevada's cousin's history teacher, the patterns in magic, how Rogan hires people, the District DA, discussions of reasons for having children, and more.
