research for the young wizard

The heroine's quest involves a lot of research. Of course. No mentor to conveniently point her to Mount Doom, and no Mount Doom for her to be pointed to at that. . . .
But -- "she's going to find stuff" is too vauge for the outline to jell about it. I need to work out what she is going to find, and ration it out.
All the more fun in that I know what happens in the end, and a little bit before it: she will have two possible ways to fix the problem. Then she fixes the problem and saves the day.
How she chooses between them -- well, the only thing I know for certain is that she's leaning toward the other when she gets an insight.
But if the plots of tripping merrily over land and sea and discovering what she needs to know are to play nicely together, I need some clues about the latter.
