He inched onward, over the wet floor, with the command reiterating itself to him without ceasing, and every time reminding him of the possibility. Tristan's tongue touched his lip. If he slipped, the others might not be able to rescue him. Or only at a price.

At that company, the slip wasn't pink but white, stapled to the information from the unemployment office. Nowadays they probably don't even give you that; they probably just send you an email. But back then it was paper, something to hold in our fists as they pushed us out the door.
