Okay, laddie, you're the main character.   Which means you have to have a name. . . .

I'm nearly done outlining!  I need a name for you for the first draft!

The irony is that he's a character with the serial numbers filed off.  It took me a long time to pull off the original name -- but it worked, I can't think of him as that now.  Or, for that matter, anything else.

There are a few names that hit closer than others. Perhaps I'll just choose one and run with it, and see if it grows on me.

Glad it happens to real writers, too, although you've got my sympathy. Right now I'm trying to get a story down that literally has only one character with a real name, everyone else is named for a characteristic. (ie, Iggi=>ignious=>fire elementalist)
And the has-a-real-name guy is, so far, a minor character.

Happens to a lot of writers, though some of us are more bugged by it than others. I have heard of writers who can cheerfully write about the adventures of Xyxy until they figure out what to put in the placeholder.
