vignette challenge

This week's prompt is:
thaw
Anyone can join, with a 50-word vignette in the comments. Your vignette does not have to include the prompt term.
My efforts:
One could not leave the mountains until the thaw had melted the snow, and the snow-melt had poured down the swollen rivers. So he rode along the road in the height of summer, with the trees green, and the ditches full of wildflowers.
At least the castle was in sight.
His eyes swept over them, and he froze.
"Professor," said Jonnet, "has anyone ever read such things before?"
"I'll have to look at your work," he said, his hands moving with agitated energy.
"We didn't crack open the rolls," said Nina. "To make sure it didn't break them the way it broke the clock."
He blinked. "Quite rightly."
