My efforts:

At a crossroads, a man, roughly clad in brown clothes, ran toward them. "My lords, my lords!"
Karl pulled up his horse.
"My lords, devilry afoot! A shadow came to the village, over a cradle, and had to be driven out with candles!"
Sven froze. Such details warned of monsters.

"No, you don't!" said her mother.
"You've thrown her out of your home," said the neighbor. "Do you expect her to stand there until she dies of thirst?"
She walked down from the porch and put her hands on Solange's shoulders. "Besides, how will you stop her? Stand here yourself?"

"Some we'll have to steal," said Hannelore, sourly.
"Details, details," said Gianna, waving a hand in the air. "We are not stealing them except for the benefit even of those whom we steal from. Especially them."
"We hope," said Susannah-Rose, dryly. "We can only do our best to be perfect."
