fracturing the fairy tale

Was poking around with an idea of a novel based on fracturing fairy tales. (That's what happens, sometimes, when you read something that claims to be about changed fairy tales that reads like the author never read any.)
Would have to stick a lot more with well-known ones. How many people can recognize a twist on "The Dancing Water, the Singing Apple, and the Speaking Bird"? but then, most people realize the princess isn't supposed to be killed and stay dead -- and even unavenged -- when her wicked sister pushes her overboard.
It opens with a princess worried about her fate, and she goes and talks to her mother's magic mirror. Whereupon the mirror starts recounting back story.
Well, it does tell her what she needs to do. But when I chased back three fairy tales -- Sleeping Beauty, The Golden Bird, Snow White -- I wondered how far back I needed to go.
I also think I may need to time this backstory. The mirror says it in an hour or less, or else in hour-sized chunks. sigh
