now and then

Pondering the first stages of outlining a story. And whether linear time works well for it.
Do I begin with the first idea I had, and backfill the story of how she came to be a (small) legend already at her age? Or possibly flash-back to it?
Or do I start back then? Would give me an interesting time figuring out exactly when to start. It's not quite "how much of Cinderella's drudgery to show when it's nearly as tedious to read about as it was to do," but close. OTOH, it will set up the fame, and also the love interest.
Story structure gets interesting.
