When you gave a character a book of magic spells early in the novel, and his use of them is significant later -- 

It's wise to give him a chance or two to show off along the way.   

Especially when it gives you an excuse to remind people of his existence in a way that does not seemed contrived.

Fortunately, he was there just when I needed a plot device to let characters lurk unseen, so that worked.
