tale of a child

There are fairy tales with child protagonists, of course.
If you read up on them, there are even tales that start with child protagonists who are adults at the end.
The problem with retelling them is that the story time is more conspicuous in a novel than in a spare and laconic fairy tale.
In the fairy tale, too, the characters often spend those years in a lowly position -- prisoner of a witch, hiding out with dwarfs, drudging as a gardener's boy. Mine is insisting that they escape the first problem and only later get walloped with the consequences.
Considerations, considerations.
