In Egypt, during the First Intermediate Period, nobles still bragged in their epigraphs about their deeds and their battles and their promotions, as they had before, but they started to brag, as well, that they gave food to the hungry and drink to the thirsty, protected the fatherless, the widow, and the poor.

The Emperor Valentinian forbade marriages between barbarians and Romans. The Visigothic Breviary of Alaric II repeated it in its compilation of Roman law, only this time the intent was the Visigoths trying to keep themselves free of Hispano-Roman brides.

Anne Boleyn was fiercely set against Princess Mary, insisting that she was no princess but an accursed bastard. She did everything in her power to keep Mary and Henry from ever meeting. When Mary resisted being a Lady rather than a Princess, she lost her household and was consigned to the nursery where Elizabeth was, where the servants were to treat Elizabeth as the superior and to greet any claim from Mary of being a princess by boxing her ears as a cursed bastard. One piece of international diplomacy was that Anne must not refer to Mary as a bastard any more.
