Weather is one of those annoying things to write about.

Sometimes it's plot significant:  fog to hide what happens, snow or rain to trap the characters indoors, what have you.  And sometimes it's useful for setting mood  -- tragedy can happen on a dark and dreary day or ironically, on a bright and sunshiny one.

But -- the thing is about weather is that it's always there as long as your characters ever poke their noses outside.  Even when it's not a convenient place to have significant weather.

Your readers may find clear and sunny nondescript enough that you can never specify anything more, and keep the story going without their wondering, but other readers have been known to mind.

On the other hand, there's always the possibility of using it to inspire plot developments -- or sticking it in as local color and find it running about, laughing maniacally, and influencing things all over the place. . . .

I'm rather fond of locations that insist on interesting weather to go with the scenic bits, which with the help of some extra wind, are so convenient for people to fall off of, or into, or under...

No, at least not in the adventure bits. I tend to leave them alive but with broken or strained bits to whinge about and make things harder for the other characters trying to shift everyone along at a safe rate. However, bad weather is sooo convenient for covering murders, and I haven't got all the mystery plot-bunnehs written, as yet!

Caught up as we are at hiding away, we forget how much weather can affect our lives, our stories, or our adventures. Then again, most story tellers don't know how to tell a story, and think that a monotone is just the way to relate events.

Ladies and gents, if you won't let yourself get excited by something, why are you wasting our time?

(Winter doldrums and end of the month blues, I'll be feeling better on December 30th when I get paid. :) )
