As is its wont. . . but really, I'm very bad at indicating time passing. Especially several years.

I think I shall put in a seasonal reference in each one. Summer, fall, winter, spring, summer, fall, winter, spring will indicate something

Meanwhile, the hero goes off and does something. At least it shows his nicer side. But I suspect it will have to come up again.

I had a detail of world-building: clouds in this world often take on clear and recognizable shapes. It's turning into a nuisance to remember. OTOH, I can easily fix the problem by slipping cloud shapes into the sky whenever I see I forgot. I shall have to ponder whether to keep it.

It may be wise to have the hero and heroine buy food, they know they are in danger of being unable to buy, owing to magic.

But either I have to use the fact later, even if the heroine only frets that she can't stop and eat even if she collapses, or remove it. And either way, I have to parse this way down.

Picked up a story again and had some people next to a marshy area and later walking through the woods.

When I send her through the forest where there are glades filled with wildflowers. . .

Opening scene of the story has to be a calm day.  The heroine's brother particularly choose it to be a calm day as this is good for lessons on climbing up and down walls.

A common trait in fairy tales:  something happens three times.  Cinderella goes to three balls, three brothers try to build the magic ship that sails through air as well as water, three sisters set out to seek their fortune and find a coach-and-six, a coach-and-four, and a great bear -- etc.  etc.

So the characters have landed themselves at a lighthouse. And one of them, being fond of history, started to talk about its past.

Or rather one incident about its past. It involved pirates.

Actually, it may be a first time for some of the characters -- handy for explanations -- especially if it's the viewpoint character.

firebirds

I mentioned, in the first paragraphs, that there were unicorns and firebirds in the forest.  Some local color to add clues about magic.  Above and beyond the fact that the woods involved are always in dusk. . . you can't be too careful in cluing the readers in.

A unicorn has appeared.  Twice.  In plot significant ways.

I wonder if a firebird will as well.
